From Toots To Barry
By David De Jesus
Oh! Barry, Dear Barry
My loving Grandson
I'm so proud of you Barry
And what you have done
I know that you think
That I wasn't there
When "Obama Wins Big"
Went out over the air
But besides you I stood
Though you couldn't see
That breeze that caressed you
Yes, that was me
You see,
I was invited to heaven
By the angel of death
So I sent in my Vote
Many days ‘fore I left
The reason to heaven
They asked me to come
For you a big Gala
And man we had fun
There's Martin, there's Malcolm
Hey Bobby, where's John?
Coretta and Ella
Just got their moves on
John Brown and his brave sons
Were having a ball
Miss Rosa of course
Was still sitting tall
The angels were singing
We all sang along
Max Roach kept the beat
While Sachmo', he blew his horn
Paul Robeson sounded like thunder
When he opened his mouth
For he remembered
What it was like to be raised
In the South
Nat and Billie sang together
They both blended in one voice
While Doctor Drew, Ben Banneker
Were toasting with Doctor Dubois
Now piano man Joplin
He, kept the place hopin'
Oh! What a party.
It's was second to none
There goes Isaac Hayes,
‘Satchel' Paige and
Jackie Robinson
I see Jesse Owens, Wilma Rudolph,
Flo Jo Joyner and the rest of the team
They're running around shouting
For you're the answer to all their dreams
Thurgood Marshall, Fredrick Douglas,
Booker T. and Adam Powell
Who treaded this tough path
Toward a brand new tomorrow
All spoke of you highly
With enormous esteem
Hey, there goes Hattie Mc Daniel
Talking to Butterfly McQueen
Richard Pryor and Bernie Mac
Were sitting and joking with Biggie and 2Pac
Just laughing loud and making up raps
About the Platinum ceiling
You just cracked
Dear ‘Old Black Moses'
She never lost her focus
The Underground Railroad
You well know
She was all grins and smiles
While chatting with Sarah and Miles
For the railroad, it has nowhere to go
Marcus Garvey and Elijah
Father D. together stood
In one voice united
They all recited
He stands for Justice
And He stands for Good
They all were here to celebrate
Too many all to name
‘Sweetwater'
While waiting on their game
Both jumped so high above the sky
When your election was proclaimed
For things had been this way too long
It was long passed time for change
Langston Hughes and Mahalia
Medgar Evers and Honest Abe
Never thought this day would come
Never in all their many days
But the whole world saw it happen
And all the Nations are still amazed
It was on the air both far and wide
A historical Event
That to the nation's highest Post
By stunning landslides coast to coast
We can now beat our chest and proudly boast
A Blackman is The President
So now you know the reason why
To the party beyond the sky
An invitation to me they gave
It was to honor you and the path you've paved
Plus they wanted me to come and celebrate
AMONG THE SONS OF SLAVES
Beautifully written, I enjoyed your poem and I could see the party happening!
